I’ve been stomping about in the cold and in snow in my new Decora Sonata winter boots, £140 from Merrell. Here’s how well they’ve battled the elements.
Product description: “An exquisite masterpiece of warmth and sophistication, our Decora Sonata boot doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to cold weather performance and style. M Select WARM insulated, this waterproof leather lace-up can hit the high notes (and high country) with its sassy faux fur collar, winter-specific traction and protection.”
Cold weather: One thing I’ve discovered – these boots are not a good pick for indoor wear. They’re so warm and furry that your feet will immediately heat up and sweat, and you’ll feel like you’re wearing electric blankets on the ends of your legs. Keep them by the door instead, and lace up before you head out into bitter cold. As well as getting very muddy in Scotland in them, I’ve also been cycling to work in mine and swapping them for flats in the office – they’re fearless against mud, rain and sub-zero temperatures.
In snow: Snow is where the Decoras come into their own – they’ll keep you reliably warm and dry in freezing conditions. Mine came along to the alps with me and proved to have great grip on ice, even mid-snowball fight. They’re light and flexible, unlike clunky walking boots, and they dry quickly when you eventually take them off. They also look very nice, with rugged stripy laces and a fur trim.
Merrell Decora Sonata Boots Review – Verdict: An “exquisite masterpiece of warmth and sophistication”? Probably not. A comfy, warm and waterproof pair of winter boots you can battle cold in and win? Absolutely. If you work outdoors or you’re heading off on a ski season and you’re after a reliable pair of boots that also look good, the Decoras are ideal.
