Road cycling favourites from Fatbirds

If the Tour de Yorkshire has gotten you itching to get on your bike this summer, check out Fatbirds, an online treasure trove of road and trail ready cycling kit. Bike lust alert!

Fatbirds have been in the biking business for 18 years, and they know their cycling stuff. They build bikes from frame, stock stellar brands and have tons of gear online, ready for you to get pushing pedals in style. Here’s my pick of the best gear for a summer of cycling.

1. Merida ride alloy Juliet £749.99

This is Juliet. Isn’t she beautiful? If you want to invest your pennies in a sleek road bike, Merida’s Juliet offers top of the range components for well under a grand. Aimed at ladies keen to get out on the road more than competitive racers, it’s been designed in carbon and aluminium to fit the female shape for a more comfortable ride than traditional designs.

2. Giro helmet £52.99
Giro’s Feather helmet is designed for trail riding but it’s a super versatile choice, whatever adventures you’re planning. It’s fully adjustable, so you can fit it to your head perfectly, and the light weight and air-wicking vents mean that you’ll hardly feel it. I like this sorrel design but it also comes in matte black if you’re going for the ninja-on-a-bike look.

3. Shimano road shoes £84.99
Shimano’s rather genius road shoes are designed specifically to fit women’s feet, with a low, narrow heel, a lightweight fibreglass sole and comfy mesh panels built in. The buckle closure provides a snug fit and air holes in the sole keep feet cool. Lovely stuff.

4. Pearl Izumi Elite Prima reverse jacket £66.99
Stay bright, safe and beautiful in this gorgeous windcheater. Pearl Izumi’s Prima jacket is reversible, so you can wear the eye-catching fluorescent orange side when you’re out on your bike and the black side if you pop into town. It’ll pack up small in your pannier if the sun comes out too, so it’s perfect for layering up on the fly.

5. Santini gel 3/4 knickers £64.99
Ooh, slinky pants! These stretchy cycling leggings are super comfy but compact enough to reduce muscle strain. The gel padding is designed to absorb shocks and keep you riding for longer, and the longer length makes them perfect for autumn and spring cycling adventures as well as summer wear. And they totally don’t make your bum look big. Score.
