These trousers are meant for walking. I hiked up a storm (and in plenty of storms) in the new Acai Chino Roll Up Trousers, £66 to see how they performed on the trail.
Acai chinos review
Product description: “These high-waisted, water and stain resistant stretch chino style slim fit trousers have been designed specifically for the active woman. The DWR water repellent finish will keep you dry in light shower rain and protect you from splashes of mud or water when on your bike, a boat, on a hike or during any type of outdoor adventures.”
Hiking adventures: Well-fitting, comfortable outdoor trousers for women are surprisingly hard to find, so pulling on Acai’s chinos is a delight – I love the high-waisted but relaxed fit (if you prefer a slim fit, go a size smaller than your usual). The hems definitely look best when rolled up, but they’re still long enough to wear both with sandals and hiking boots. The stretchy softshell material of the chinos is highly breathable and quick to dry, so even if you’re working up a sweat on a fast-paced hike you won’t overheat. The chinos roll up tiny, too – perfect for chucking in your backpack for tropical travels when to need to protect your legs from pesky insects. I also love the plentiful mesh-lined pockets, including a handy zipped pocket on the back.
In stormy weather: Acai’s waterproofing technology really works – even in heavy rain water simply beads off the surface, and you can wipe mud and dirt straight off the Teflon-covered surface. All waterproofing fades over time, so Acai recommend regularly treating the trousers with Grangers Wash + Repel.
Verdict: Deliciously light and comfortable, yet tough enough to withstand a downpour, Acai’s chinos are the perfect relaxed trousers to see you through from spring to autumn on camping trips, travels and the trail. The chinos are available in khaki or black for £66. If you’re after something for warmer weather, try Acai’s brilliant hiking shorts.
