The best sea swimming spots on England’s Coast

“We have quite a charming beach to ourselves,” wrote Queen Victoria in 1845 of her favourite sea swimming spot on the Isle of Wight. Seek out the little sandy bay she used to love, along with nine more of my favourite coastal swimming spots in England, with my guide over at England’s Coast, a new website dedicated to the best places to adventure, eat, swim and stay by the sea.

My guide to some of the best safe places to sea swim in England includes well-known favourites and lesser-known gems in Northumberland, the Lake District, Devon and the North York Moors. Paddle in sandy coves home to shipwrecks, swim with dolphins or grab your swimsuit and go island-hopping. Some of my recommended spots are great if you’re planning a weekend of hiking and sea swimming, too – we usually think of the North York Moors and the Lake District National Parks as inland landscapes perfect for walkers, but did you know that there are wonderful beaches safe for swimming dotting their coastlines?

Taking your first sea swimming trips this summer? My guide also includes practical safety advice from the RNLI that will stand you in good stead, and a handy safety video for anyone keen to try cold water swimming.
