Taking the high road – staycation adventures on the Isle of Skye
To celebrate the launch of Naked Malt’s adventurous new competition I packed up a campervan and headed north on my own bucket list staycation – a road trip to the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. I had my eye on conquering a mountain I’ve always wanted to climb – Bla Bheinn, often called the ‘most beautiful peak in Britain’. At 929 metres high, this munro is a stiff all-day climb that requires a bit of scree scrambling – but the reward is the incredible panoramic view of Skye, the ocean and the Hebridean islands you get from the 929 metre-high summit.
My idea of an adventure in the great outdoors always involves a wild swim, so after our trek we cooled off in the hidden Torrin pools, tucked under Beinn Dearg Mhor mountain and fed by a rushing waterfall. Is there any better way to chill out after a hefty hike than a dip in view of the hills? And when evening fell we lit a fire on the beach and toasted our day exploring Scotland’s wild spaces with a well-earned dram of Naked Malt, named for the ‘naked’ sherry oak casks used to give this whisky its distinctively delicious flavour. Slàinte Mhath (that’s ‘cheers’ in Scots Gaelic)!
