Testing out Arcteryx’s new Atom SL Hoody (£170). Super light at just 235 grams and compact enough to fit in a pocket, this is an efficient and reliably warm mid layer. But is it worth the hefty price tag?
An all-girl ski trip to St Anton Am Arlberg in the gorgeous Tirol region of Austria to celebrate Snowsport England’s fantastic GO SKI GO BOARD initiative, encouraging everyone to give snowsports a try in partnership with the #ThisGirlCan campaign. We took to the pistes during St Anton’s Ladies First weeks for a few days of exploring in the forests, falling over in deep powder and eating our bodyweight in potatoes.
I’ve been tearing around the Austrian pistes and the Welsh mountains in Odlo’s Blackcomb Evolution range of winter sport underwear, partly made from recyclable materials. I tested out the long baselayer pants (£65) and baselayer shirt (£65). Cosy, comfy and saving the planet – I’m a big fan.
It ain’t easy looking good in a blizzard, but help is at hand! These wonder products will help you ski, surf and have slightly blue hair all winter long, without the cracked lips and chapped face. All together now: “the cold never bothered me anyway!”.
A few weeks ago I train-hopped my way around Switzerland on assignment for Greentraveller. I took a series of incredible rail journeys, stopping to admire the Christmas markets in Zurich, ski in Les Diablerets and eat my weight in fondue in the mountains. Here’s the full diary of my travels using the Swiss Travel System.
Off on a ski season this winter? You don’t need warm pants, extra scarves or photos of your dog. Trust me, I’ve seen enough emergency care packages get delivered to Cadbury’s-starved seasonnaires to know that if you’re off to work a winter you require:
Get seriously inspired by Angelica Sykes, a British pro snowboarder who is tearing up the mountains are a freerider. I first met the lovely Angelica when we were both seasonnaires in Cervinia, in Italy. She was already getting into boarding in the backcountry then, and it’s amazing to see her now, riding as a pro and shredding her way through the Freeride World Qualifiers to be the top-ranked British woman. Ever wanted to take the next step and compete in your favourite sport? This girl tells you how to get the grit.
Some snaps from the French Alps, featuring angelic gogo dancers, failed human caterpillars and lots of lovely powder.
Keen to get kitted out for the slopes? Here’s my roundup of the best ski gear for 2015 that’s both snow and pocket-friendly. Now, if only the Alps had some decent powder…
Some snaps from the French Alps, featuring jazz bands at 2500m, a bunch of fuzzy animals on skis and making a snowy new friend called Clive.
Whether you’re off on a ski season, planning a little foray to the Alps or just want to keep your toes toasty on wintery walks, a pair of chunky snow boots are an outdoor wardrobe essential. Here’s my review of Meindl Sölden snow boots, £85.49 from Complete Outdoors in time for the winter.
I spent last week skiing like a loon in Val Thorens, and the fab folk at Mountain Warehouse kitted me out before I left for my Three Valleys adventure with this gorgeous purple Heavenly Extreme Ski Jacket, £69.99. Seven days of relentless bombing down pistes, falling over in powder and attempting to look cool in the park seemed like the ideal way to put it through its paces.
I am beyond excited about January. Four days in Verbier followed swiftly by a week in Val Thorens means I can finally stop pretending that riding my bike really fast down hills feels a bit like skiing and actually SKI!
I love skiing. I love beards. The fact that I don’t have enough testosterone to grow my own beard need hinder my attempts to stay warm on the slopes NO LONGER!
I’ve always been a little bit in love with Fat Face’s philosophy:
“Hunt down the perfect wave, ski from dawn till dusk, shed your 9 to 5 skin. When all is said and done, better a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office.”
Snowsports are definitely the most style conscious sports around, as Dolce and Gabbana are obviously aware, even if their lovely model has forgotten her trousers. Working as a seasonnaire in the Italian Alps, I’m constantly exposed to a fashion parade of girl skiiers and boarders in the latest look-at-me labels.
As devised by myself and my lovely housemate Jillian whilst we were very hungover and in bed. We’ve been working in the Italian Alps for two months now, in which I have learned that salopettes are perfect for après ski, as they are wipe clean, and that I have the strength in me to clean over 700 toilets. Who knew? I have also learnt that, as a seasonnaire:
Waxing guide! That’s boards and skis, not legs. Snowboard wonderkid and fellow seasonnaire Simon Andrews kindly took time out of shredding the crap out of the Cervinia backcountry to compile this fantastic guide to waxing your snowboard or skis for The Girl Outdoors.
The Girl Outdoors loves a good girl sports hero, especially one as fearlessly cool as Becky Hammond, UK freeski champion and part of Team GB. The 25 year old took time out of training halfpipe in Breckenridge, Colorado, to chat about the highlights of her sporting career and what the ski scene is like for aspiring pro girls.
I’m off on a ski season to Cervinia, Italy in December, which I am so excited about that I can’t sleep at night without cuddling my new woolly hat. The fact that I can’t ski very well is clearly immaterial in my night-time fantasies of perfectly executed black runs. I am busy figuring out what gear to take with me to the mountains, so I was very pleased when the lovely people at Gear Zone sent me over some sun creams from French company Annecy to test.
