Autumn walks in Great Britain: a little round up of places to wander and things to do this autumn. If you’re longing for fresh air, russet leaves and the chance to spot wildlife, these outdoor adventure resources and walk ideas are perfect for inspiration.
AUTUMN WALKS IN GREAT BRITAIN
WHERE TO GO
1. There are woods closer to you than you think. Use The Forestry Commission or the Woodland Trust’s brilliant resources to find out where: they both have handy maps and postcode finders to help you locate your nearest forest. The Wildlife Trust nature reserves are teeming over with animals and are incredibly peaceful year-round – pick a wooded reserve if you want to spot changing colours in the leaves.
2. Walking Britain is my ultimate go-to guide, focusing on areas of natural beauty and with detailed guides to each walk, usually including photos. There are short walks perfect for families as well as longer hikes.
3. Visit a National Trust property that includes walks. Each NT walk is a free download including route directions, a map and points of interest, and you can also browse by theme, such as coastal walks, wildlife walks or car free walks. My favourite is their guide to star gazing spots featuring areas free of light pollution, perfect for a night-time stroll when the nights draw in.
4. I live in Bristol, and my favourite place to explore in autumn is south Wales, especiall the Brecon Beacons, which turn golden in autumn. Try Visit Wales for four of the most beautiful rambles in the country.
WHAT TO DO
1. Check out the BBC’s fantastic list, 20 Autumn activities for fun ideas.
2. Children will love the ideas listed on the Breathing Spaces website, such as planting for butterflies or creating a bug house. Perfect if you have a small garden.
3. Discover history. The Times lists classics like Hadrian’s Wall and Offa’s Dyke – read up on their past before you go, and savour retracing ancient steps. Go romantic and visit the grave of your favourite classic poet on your walk – most are buried in beautiful, tranquil country churchyards.
