Peniche Surf Lodge Review

This summer I decided to go surfing in Portugal. After a little bit of googling I chose Peniche as my destination – this gorgeous surf spot is one and a half hour’s drive north from Lisbon and known for good surf conditions for all levels; beginners, intermediate (me!) and pros.

I stayed at Surfers Lodge Peniche. It opened just a year ago and has Swedish owners with passion for cool design details, wooden furniture, delicious food and surfing, of course! It’s not the cheapest local option but it’s one of the most awesome places I’ve ever stayed at. Even if you don’t stay there, you can always pop along to check out the Moroccan style roof deck and stay for a sunset celebration.

For one lovely, relaxing, fun and healthy week my daily routine went something like this:

7am Wake up and have delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, croissants, pancakes, juice, coffee and more.

8am Get into my wetsuit and carry my surfboard to Baleal beach, about a kilometre from the lodge. Warm up on the beach, stretch, stick my lead on, paddle out and surf, surf, surf! The good thing about waking up early is that the ocean is pretty empty.

11:30am Hot shower and lunch.

1:30pm Go for a second surf session or relax at the rooftop terrace, jump in the pool to cool down in the sun. Sip from a cold drink, wear sunnies, read a book, chat to my new surf buddies. One afternoon we went skateboarding to practice our turns, that was a lot of fun!

3pm Some days the surf instructors would show us videos and analyze our wave performance. It really helps you to understand how to correct your take off, turns and position on the board.

5pm Afternoon tea. Or a cocktail…

7pm Dinner at the lodge’s restaurant. I was especially fond of fresh, spicy tuna salad made withg tuna marinated in ginger and sesame. Yum.

10pm Finish of with a goodnight glass of wine in the jacuzzi on the roof deck, a spot of stargazing and then a very good sleep. And repeat!
