Places to stay: Bedruthan Hotel x Töastie Kids Family Break

Review: Bedruthan Steps Hotel x Töastie Kids Family Break

Anyone with outdoors-mad kids will have pondered the question – where can we escape to with adventure on the doorstep, rainy day activities on tap, and perhaps a glass of wine and even *whisper it* a spa to escape to for the adults? The answer might be closer than you think.

The Bedruthan Hotel has perched looking over Mawgan Porth beach in Cornwall for over 60 years, and it’s now joined forces with Töastie Kids to create an escape that’s perfect for nature-mad little ones. Töastie make bright and beautiful rainwear for kids and adults, so they’re the perfect brand for kitting you all out for a weekend on Britain’s mercurial coastline. The Little Explorers two-night stay includes breakfast, dinner and a messy play session for children, and kids also get a Mini Coastal Explorer guide to rock pooling, shell collecting and mini beach cleans as well as a microfibre towel to take to the beach.

We pulled up at the Bedruthan Hotel earlier this spring in pouring rain. Spoiler alert, it did not stop raining for our entire stay. Such is Cornwall. Luckily, rooms at the Bedruthan are a cosy delight when you’re soggy and sodden. Our bedroom was bright and calm, with a kind size bed and a sofa bed for kids (a cot can also be provided). The star of the show is the huge view of the ever-changing ocean and of Mawgan Porth beach – I loved the chairs perfectly positioned for sitting with a coffee to watch the weather roll in over the sea.

Roll in it did. Luckily, Bedruthan is perfect for little visitors with lots of energy to expel. There’s a lovely warm indoor pool complete with a kid’s pool for splashing in. Not that relaxing for grownups, perhaps, but there’s also an adults-only spa with sauna and hydrotherapy pool, and adult can also book sessions in the hotel’s spa garden, as well as treatments.

My daughter Sylvie’s favourite activity? The hotel has its very own soft play, Jungle Tumble, which is kitted out with a ball pit and things to clamber over. There’s also a bookable creche at the hotel – hot tip, book a creche session to coincide with an adults-only spa garden booking for an hour or two off duty.

One of the big highlights was supper. Each night we ate with Sylvie in the Wild Cafe and shared fresh prawns, pasta and steak. Sylvie sampled dishes from the thoughtful kids menu, and we toasted the day’s adventures with local beers and Cornish pinot noir, all with huge views of stormy seas.

Whatever the weather, Bedruthan has gorgeous Mawgan Porth on the doorstep ready for exploring. It’s a five-minute walk to this huge expanse of golden sandy beach, which is lifeguarded so you can swim and surf, or take a surf lesson with a local school. When I’m in this corner of Cornwall I love to hike the steep coast path opposite the hotel, which is a stiff climb but rewards with stunning views of the Atlantic. Sylvie, of course, was happy playing on the sand, searching in tiny rockpools and dipping her toes in the ocean.

The Little Explorers Break is available to book until 22 December 2026. From £284 per night for two adults and one child.
