Swim in safety in rivers, pools and the ocean safely by following some key advice in my new wild swimming safety tips video. Whenever summer rolls around I itch to jump in to lakes and rivers, but it’s essential to take some precautions, including where you swim, what you wear and more. Watch my video before you take the plunge!

Wild swimming safety tips

, Do your research before swimming in a new spot – do others swim there? Is swimming permitted? Try wildswimming.com for new spots near you. If in doubt, don’t swim in a new place you aren’t sure about.
, Always check the depth and speed of the water before you get in – in the sea, check carefully for any hidden rocks, and in rivers, avoid areas with fast-flowing currents.
, Search out an easy exit point before entering the water.
, Avoid swimming alone – take a swimming buddy.
, Wear aquatic sandals with a good grip when you’re swimming off rocks.
, Wear a wetsuit in colder weather.
, Have a plan for warming up as soon as you get out – keep warm clothes and a warm drink handy.
, If you encounter weeds or trailing seaweed don’t panic. They are easiest to navigate by floating gently through.
, Only swim sober (save your picnic booze for afterwards).
, Avoid swimming in city rivers and canals – the water can carry harmful bacteria.
, Lakes and ponds can be home to nasties such as blue-green algae, a scum on the surface at of the water that can make you sick. Avoid swimming anywhere with stagnant water or a greenish bloom on the surface of the water.
, Lacking confidence or unsure where to start? Try joining your local outdoor swimming club – you’ll meet like-minded people and get to explore local swim spots.
