Montane trail running kit review

Montane‘s innovative, hard-wearing outdoor clothing has always been designed with lightweight endurance adventures in mind, and their Via Trail collection of trail running kit is no different. The adventure kit brand’s waterproof jackets, lightweight shorts and tights and comfortable running backpacks are ready to go the distance on the trails with you. Whether you’re a beginner who wants to make the switch from roads to the wild, you’re like me and you’re running half marathons or you’re a pro eyeing up your next ultra event, this sleek, lightweight collection is perfect for helping you to run further and faster in comfort. I’ve been testing out Montane trail running kit on my local routes – here’s how my favourite pieces performed.

Montane Trail Running Kit Review

Montane Unisex Podium Pull-On jacket, £110
This futuristic-looking jacket is the perfect running companion when you’re going the distance on a trail and need instant waterproofing that packs down small when not in use. The unisex Podium Pull-On jacket squeezes down into its own little stuff sack and fits easily into a running pack or even into a back pocket, but despite its size and paltry 115g weight, this jacket really delivers on performance, cutting out wind and repelling even heavy rain. Despite its high waterproofing, the Podium is still breathable enough that you can keep running without working up too much of a sweat. I love how easy it is to pull on and off, and a snug hood and elasticated waist also keep rain at bay – this is a versatile and high-performing jacket that will also work for hiking and cycling.

Montane Women’s Trail 3/4 tights, £55
These sleek tights are so slim-fitting you’ll barely notice you’re wearing them, but despite their close cut they’re still very comfortable, with a nice high waist and enough stretch to let you keep moving. Unlike flimsier leggings, these hard-wearing trail tights really feel built to last. The handy rear zipped pocket is roomy enough to take your keys.

Montane Women’s Blade t-shirt, £30
This simple, highly breathable t-shirt could easily become your new favourite running top. The Blade tee is slim-fitting and easy to layer under a jacket, but is cut with enough flexibility to move as you do, and never feels restrictive to run in. Polygiene technology wicks away sweat well, making the Blade great for multi-day adventures, camping and hiking as well as for shorter trail runs. The Blade has a flattering longer fit I love, too.

Montane Women’s Trail Claw shorts, £40
Meet my new favourite shorts. I’ve been living in the Claws since the weather has improved – they’re the perfect looser-fitting running, walking, do-anything short. I love the lightweight fabric and wide waistband – they make the Claws comfortable for mile after mile of running on challenging trails. The light fabric means they’re quick to dry when they inevitably get sweaty, and polygiene technoloy helps with odour control. The rear zipped pocket is brilliant, taking keys and other bits and bobs without pulling the shorts out of position. Hidden drawstrings also help get the perfect fit. A brilliant quiver-of-one adventure short.

Montane Trailblazer 3 waist pack, £30
If you find running backpacks and hydration rucksacks bulky and uncomfortable, you may get on better with a waist pack like the Montane Trailblazer, which has a three litre capacity. This well-sized pack cinches in tightly around your waist and doesn’t bump about as you move, and despite its dinky size it can take your phone, keys and even a flyweight jacket when you’re on longer runs. Multiple zipped pockets make it easy to access everything on the go. Although it’s a running pack, I’ve actually been using the Trailblazer just as much on hikes and cycles when I don’t want to carry a hefty rucksack – and I think this adventurous pack offers great value for money.
