Fjallraven Nuuk parka review

Product description: “Comfortable women’s parka with synthetic lining that effectively keeps out the wind, rain and winter temperatures. Many practical pockets and a fleece-lined hood with detachable artificial fur.”

Cold snap: Putting the Nuuk on is like slipping into a duvet. The Micro Loft padding that lines it reminds me of a down jacket and delivers instant, comforting warmth even in freezing temperatures. The fully waterproof outer layer protects from rain and wind and has protected me from heavy rain and snow even after hours outside. I love the longer length of the Nuuk – if short jackets leave you with a cold midriff this mid-thigh length will suit you perfectly.

The hood deserves a special mention – it is heavenly to wear, lined with fleece and edged with synthetic fur that doesn’t itch and is detachable. It’s designed to stay put and looks great, too – this is a very handsome parka.

I’d read that the Nuuk runs large in sizing but I found a 12 a perfect fit, with room for a midlayer beneath it (although it’s so warm that you can get away with just a baselayer if temperatures aren’t freezing), and there are drawcords at the waist and bottom so it’s easy to adjust. Fjallraven are proud of the jacket’s eight – count them – pockets – I like the inner safety pocket for keeping your phone warm and dry.

Verdict: Okay, so it may be jawdroppingly expensive, but like all things Fjallraven, the Nuuk is beautifully made, designed to last and very adept at keeping you warm and dry. If you’re going to splash your cash on a seriously warm, comfortable and rather gorgeous parka, the Nuuk (which also comes in a cheerful red) with do you proud for years of winter storms to come. For another functional option, try Kathmandu’s 5 in 1 jacket.
