Places to stay: Borgo Pignano, Tuscany

Borgo Pignano review: World, meet somewhere I should probably keep secret – the wonderful Borgo Pignano, a medieval estate turned eco farm nestled in the Tuscan hills.

Borgo Pignano review

Borgo Pignano review

This covetable slice of Tuscan sun is like nowhere else on earth. 750 acres of the best kind of Italian cliches – think swaying cypresses, sun-soaked vineyards and gently rolling hills topped with dusky orange villages – surround Borgo Pignano, a castle-turned-hotel in its own little hamlet. Steeped in long tradition, its been proudly looking out over the land since Etruscan times.

Go riding around the incredible medieval estate on the friendly resident horses, float in the infinity pool or hike over to the the stunning medieval town of Volterra (yes, the one from Twilight).

If staying in one of the sumptuous suites is a bit out your budget, you can stay for free in one of the farm houses and help out picking olives, grapes and tomatoes in the farm’s eco-friendly veggie patch in return for bed, supper and as much Tuscan sunshine as your skin can soak up. I spent a summer here learning to make passata, failing to learn to drive a tractor and falling back in love with a slower pace of life.

Stay there: Stay at Borgo Pignano for £350 per room per night
